Tesla says Optimus production has begun in Fremont. External deliveries are still a late-2027 target.

Tesla describes the Fremont output as its first production-quality Optimus robots, but says the hard work on reliability, hands and software still stands between the line and outside customers.

What they said

Tesla says it has started making Optimus on high-volume lines in Fremont. The company called the output "the first production-quality bots that we have manufactured," according to Tesla North's account of Tesla's Q3 call and shareholder update. That is a meaningful manufacturing update, but it is not a customer-delivery announcement.

On the same call, Elon Musk said the majority of the equipment for a line designed around 1 million robots per year has arrived in Fremont. He also said reaching an annualized 20,000 robots per week would take at least a year, and possibly longer. The number is a capacity target, not current output.

The company’s public investor-relations notice confirms that Tesla released its third-quarter results on October 21, but its main update page blocked our fetch. We therefore treat the production wording and call details as Tesla claims reported by the two call accounts we opened: Tesla North and TradingKey's transcript report.

What is verified

The narrow, supportable update is that Tesla says Optimus production has begun in Fremont. That advances the robot beyond a line still being installed, which was Tesla’s position in its July update. It does not establish that Optimus has shipped to a paying customer, that Tesla has opened orders, or that a home version is ready.

Musk described remaining work on the AI system, electromechanical design, reliability and operating life. Tesla North reports that he singled out the hands and fingers as much of the remaining design work. Those are the parts that matter when a humanoid has to manipulate varied objects repeatedly rather than perform a short demonstration.

Tesla’s own timeline for outside customers remains conditional. Musk said the unresolved issues could be addressed around the end of 2027, when Tesla expects to start delivering Optimus to companies outside Tesla. TradingKey’s transcript report likewise places those early external deployments near the end of 2027 and describes industrial work as the likely first use.

What is missing

Tesla has not named an outside Optimus customer, published a price, opened a public order process, or said how many production-quality robots Fremont has made. It also has not shown the previously promised Gen 3 design publicly. None of the reporting we reviewed verifies a unit working independently in a customer site or a consumer home.

That means ShinyMetal keeps Optimus at internal only. Production is real only to the extent Tesla says it is; customer availability remains a promise. The 20,000-per-week figure is an eventual annualized-rate goal, not evidence of a running line at that rate.

What it means for a home robot

For prospective home-robot buyers, this is movement in the factory, not movement in the living room. Tesla’s stated first external uses are industrial, dangerous or repetitive jobs. Even if the late-2027 target holds, it is not a commitment to sell a robot for household chores then.

The useful marker to watch next is less a new production-rate claim than an independently verifiable deployment: a named customer, an operating task, a duration, and clarity on whether a remote human is involved. Until Tesla supplies those details, the Fremont line should be read as an internal manufacturing milestone, not proof that Optimus is ready to work in homes.
